The Hengqin Area of the Guangdong Pilot Free Trade Zone is located in the south of Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, 34 nautical miles from Hong Kong and a river away from Macau, with the nearest point being only 187 metres away from each other. The total area of 28 square kilometres is comparable to the planned development and construction land of Zhuhai Hengqin New Area until 2020.
The Zhuhai Hengqin New Area was officially established on 16 December 2009, with more special policies than the Special Economic Zone. At present, there is one town and three community committees on the island, with 11 natural villages under its jurisdiction. At the beginning of the new area, there were more than 7,000 people living on the island, of whom 4,203 were permanent residents.
Natural Climate
Hengqin New Area is located south of the Tropic of Cancer and belongs to the southern subtropical monsoon zone. The average annual temperature is 22-23 degrees Celsius, the hottest month is July, with an average temperature of 27.9 degrees Celsius, the coldest month is January, with an average temperature of 15.1 degrees Celsius; the seawater temperature is 22.4 degrees Celsius on average, the average annual precipitation is 2,015.9 millimetres and the annual water storage is 36.54 million cubic metres.

Topography
Hengqin Island has many bays, long stretches of sandy beaches and jagged rocks. The types of landforms are low mountains, hills and mudflats. The highest peak on the island is the Brain Back Mountain, with an altitude of 457.7m, the second highest peak in Zhuhai.
Hengqin New Area was originally divided into Big and Little Hengqin Islands, with the waters of the Cross Gate (i.e. the central ditch) between the two islands, and the East and West Dykes were built in the 1970s to connect Big and Little Hengqin Islands. The area of the island is 106.46 square kilometres, more than three times the area of Macau. The coastline around the island is 50 km long. The southern and northern parts are mostly mountainous, while the central ditch is a long east-west farming area.
Ecological Environment
Hengqin Island covers an area of about 106 square kilometres, with 896 species of plants and 108 species of terrestrial wildlife. A small but fully functional forest ecosystem is formed around the 30-square-kilometre Big Hengqin Mountain, which forms the core of the whole ecosystem.
The Great Hengqin Mountain and the two coastal wetlands basically cover the biodiversity of the whole island and are ecologically sensitive areas. In view of the "risk" of future construction, it is recommended that an "ecological protection line" be established for them and confirmed through regional legislative procedures to Protect the species pool and botanical culture of the area. In addition, some of the villages on the island currently have a considerable number of old and large trees in the form of "feng shui forests" in front and behind them.
